Early civilization dates back to 700 BC and by the 12th through
14th Centuries, Moslem influence prevailed. Portuguese and
British slave traders occupied the area in the 15th and 16th
Centuries and in 1861 to 1900 Britain consolidated control of the
entire country. Nigeria became independent on October 1, 1960
and on October 1, 1963 a republic was formed. On May 30, 1967,
the eastern region of the country seceded from the country and
became the Republic of Biafra, forcing the country into civil
war. Over 1 million people were killed and the secessionists
capitulated on January 12, 1970. Oil revenues have made massive
economic development possible. Industrialization has become
centered in the cities and agriculture has been neglected. In
October 1979 the country was returned to civilian government. On
December 31, 1983, military rule returned with a coup and the
government has vowed to return the country to democracy by 1990.
